At most public community celebrations, respectful participation is welcomed, and many events offer face painting on site, which is the best signal that joining in is invited. Treat it as tribute rather than costume: skip zombie or horror mashups, keep the look traditional, and pair it with genuine participation. When events are hosted by cultural organizations, follow their posted guidance.
Match events to their natural weekend: farms and festivals shine in the calm first half of October, haunted attractions and big parties peak the final two weekends, and Día de los Muertos events land October 31 through November 2. Book anything sellable, tours, shows, timed tickets, in September. One anchor event per weekend beats cramming three into the last Saturday.
Wide crowd shots are fine; portraits need permission, especially of children, performers mid-ritual, and personal ofrendas at Día de los Muertos events, where some altars honor recent losses. Ask first, accept no gracefully, and skip flash at night processions and candlelit events, where it genuinely disrupts. When an event posts photography guidance, that overrides all defaults.
